The Historical Evaluation & Research Organization and its library, the HERO Library, has been a fixture in the defense analytical community since 1962, when it was founded by retired Army Col. Trevor N. Dupuy. Since that time, HERO has gone through a number of changes. Today, the organization and its holdings are in the care of Charles F. Hawkins.

HERO's focus has been and remains making use of military history to address contemporary issues. Work has ranged from providing policy support and operational analysis, to developing combat models and simulations, compiling historical data bases of combat engagements, preparing case studies and monographs, and conducting conferences and workshops.
